欣赏抽象绘画的难度在于,人们无法从已知的、熟悉的、具象的描绘对象中获取能够激发共鸣的图像符号。因为在具象绘画,或者写实绘画中,图像构成元素的拆分和重组都是有迹可循的,因而人们可以或多或少的在一定程度上获得对于图像内在逻辑的把控和理解。就算并没有真正明白绘画背后的意图,从可辨认的描绘对象中,观者也会得到某种聊以慰藉的感慨——即便这种感慨可能与审美无关。

于航早期的创作并没有完全脱离对叙事性的依赖和对写实性的描绘:身分不明的人物和其所作所为被呈现在画布之上,人物的衣着、仪态使人更多的联想到佛像,然而其举止又使人打消了这种猜疑。画面的构成往往是明确的单一人物主体和模糊的背景铺陈,粗犷的用色和激烈的笔触传达出于航鲜明的个人绘画风格。尽管在之后的创作中,仅有的绘画对象被选择性的抛弃,这种个人化的绘画风格却逐渐显示出其在技术语言上的主导地位,并成为于航作品中的审美主体。于航近期的画作开始更多的使用饱和度极高的色块,并通过暗色与亮色的对比渲染了某种紧张的氛围:观者总能感受到某种意义不明的激烈、冲动和难以抑制的宣泄、抒情;同时,其创作在叙事上更为破碎,仅仅采用了一些铺垫的色块去表示可能存在的另一个叙事维度。有时候画出依稀可辨的人脸表情,但下一秒又将其涂抹、遮盖,这些反复的举止反映出艺术家在绘画过程的心路历程,体现着某种“发乎情而止于礼”的理性与收敛。在激烈而直白的情感宣泄之上保存着某种迟疑和犹豫,这种适度的控制也体现出艺术家对其作品的进一步把控。

于航认为其绘画在概念上没有具象与抽象的差别,所有的呈现所承载的都是艺术家本人对所有生活事物的私人化的感受。尽管所有的事物都是以有形的方式向意识显现自身,在进入意识领域之后,这些事物被消化从而成为主观的附庸。在绘画表达上,一点、一线、一面都是形态,也是主观认知的外化。有一些形态更多地诉诸理智,而有些形态则更接近我们的情绪。至于最终呈现的画面,有形或无形的差别其实不再重要,因为它们都只是事物经过意识之后留下的痕迹。

The difficulty of appreciating abstract painting is that one cannot get evocative symbols from known, familiar and representational objects. Because in figurative painting or realistic painting, the separation and reorganization of image elements are tracable, so people can more or less to a certain extent to the image of the internal logic control and understanding. Even if the intention behind the painting is not really understood, there is something comforting about the recognizable subject -- even if it may not be aesthetic.

Yu Hang's early works did not completely break away from the reliance on narrative and realistic depiction: unidentified figures and their actions were presented on the canvas. The clothes and manners of the figures were more reminiscent of Buddha statues, but their behavior dispels such suspicions. The composition of the picture is often a clear single subject and vague background, bold color and intense brushwork to convey a distinctive personal painting style. Although only the painting objects were selectively abandoned in later creations, this personalized painting style gradually showed its dominant position in technical language and became the aesthetic subject in Yu Hang's works. Yu Hang's recent paintings began to use more highly saturated color blocks, and through the contrast between dark and bright colors to render a certain tense atmosphere: the viewer can always feel some kind of intense, impulsive, unrestrained catharsis and lyricism of unknown meaning; At the same time, its creation is more fragmented in narrative, only using some foreshadowed color blocks to represent another possible narrative dimension. Sometimes the artist draws a vaguely discernible facial expression, but the next second he paints and covers it. These repeated behaviors reflect the artist's mental process in the process of painting, reflecting a certain rationality and convergence of "being emotional but not being polite". A kind of hesitation and hesitation is preserved on top of the intense and straightforward emotional catharsis, and this moderate control also reflects the artist's further control over his works.

Yu Hang believes that there is no conceptual difference between representativeness and abstraction in his paintings, and all the representations bear the artist's personal feelings towards all living things. Although all things manifest themselves to consciousness in a tangible way, after entering the realm of consciousness, they are digested and thus become subjectively dependent. In the expression of painting, one point, one line and one side are all forms, which is also the externalization of subjective cognition. There are forms that appeal more to reason, and there are forms that are closer to our emotions. As for the final picture, the difference between the visible and the invisible is not really important, because they are only traces left by the thing after passing through consciousness.
